LOOKING FOR MOOSE?
“Where can we find a moose?”
“The one thing we really want to do while we're here is to see a
moose!”
These are among the most frequent requests and
comments that we hear from visitors to Jackson.
Here are some moose hunting tips from the Jackson Village
Association innkeepers:
While you are approaching Jackson, look in
wooded areas look for low, water-filled shallow bogs. These marshy
areas among the foothills of the White Mountains are moose
territory.! Some common haunts for these massive creatures are Route
#16 in the Ossippee area, Route #112 (the scenic Kancamaugus
highway) at the eastern end as you near Conway, and the entire
section of Route #302 heading from Jackson through the Crawford
Notch to Bretton Woods.
If you haven't’ spied one of these enormous
inhabitants of the White Mountains before you get to Jackson, ask
your innkeeper about early evening tours which bring you to likely
habitats and guarantee a 96% moose sighting success rate during the
3 hour trip.
Most importantly, heed this local wisdom on
the subject of moose!
- Moose vehicle collisions are very common
especially in the twilight hours. And the moose always wins!
- Moose frequent the ditches and shoulders even more frequently in the
buggy seasons because they are trying to escape the thick forests.
- Moose cause traffic jams! If you see several vehicles stopped by the
side of the road, there’s probably some moose viewing going on!
HAPPY MOOSE HUNTING!
